Victor/Victoria Excels
Cinematographers this year seem infatuated with the Gay theme. Such movies as Making Love, Personal Best, Partners, Death Trap, Pixote, Taxi Zum Klo, Evil Under the Sun and Victor, Victoria deal quite obviously with gayness as an issue while others merely mention it in passing. Several of these films seem destined for cable and video release in the future. One such film is Victor, Victoria, a gloriously happy, funny and totally refreshing Blake Edwards release.
Victor, Victoria deals with gayness honestly and openly. Edwards exposes some basic truths, both optimistic and pessimistic, of the gay lifestyle. He sets the stage for the audience to form their own opinions without any heavy bedroom scenes or soap opera melodramatics; an enlightened approach not found in current cinema.

The film, starring Julie Andrews and Robert Preston, portrays a starving young female singer and an aging drag queen making it to the top of the mid-thirties society on Paris' Left Bank. Andrews plays a woman who plays a man who plays a woman in an act that changes her poverty stricken singing career to instantaneous success. In her private life, she feels the confusion and frustration of the circa 1934 society's moral conflict between disapproval and acceptance.
Robert Preston plays an endearing ex-drag performer who becomes Andrews' mentor, teaching her the intricacies of drag and gay life. He is not at all self conscious of his presentation or drag performance. The character is a slick businessman whose management and instruction make Andrews a success. The counterpoint between Andrews and Preston provides the comedy sparks and his effortlessly subtle retorts are smooth and casually chic.
The film is a boisterously funny release of Gay pride and affirmation. Seeing Preston doing a drag number is one of the high points of the film.
The comedic talents of James Garner and Alex Karras are a pleasant surprise. LesleyAnne Warren's character is somewhat akin to fingernails drawn against a blackboard, as she camps-it-up as the mobster's moll.
The art and music help to bond the film together and give it added zest and appeal. Victor, Victoria is a terrifically happy, hilarious, warm and profoundly tasteful film. In all, highly recommended.
ARCADE TRAVEL
INTRODUCING A LODGING AND PLACEMENT SERVICE FOR GAYS VISITING THE 1982 WORLD'S FAIR
As you are probably aware, the 1982 World's Fair will be held in Knoxville, Tennessee, May 1 through October 31 of next year. The work is progressing on schedule for the Fair and the city is making preparations for the many visitors. Hotel and motel space will be very limited, and many visitors will be staying in private homes.
As a service for gays visiting the Fair, I am handling reservations for several homes, offering a variety of accommodations in a comfortable and friendly atmosphere for singles, couples, and small groups. The accompanying fliers describe the primary housing facilities and reservation information. Additional comparable facilities will be available, but for individuals and couples only, and for limited periods of time.
